doctorThe Heritage Centre is a fantastic idea!

It’s about time a place as important as Barnsley has somewhere to show the world what it has achieved so far, especially somewhere located in the very heart of the town.

I’m proud to say I was born and bred in Barnsley, only a mile or two from the Town Hall in fact, and was educated on Huddersfield Road at Hall Balk School and then the Sixth Form College.

Although my work as an Egyptologist takes me all over the world, I remain firmly based in Yorkshire, working at the University of York and travelling around to many of our county’s museums. Among the mummies, death masks and treasures hidden away in many of their storerooms, we’ve also started to uncover the important role our region has played in the history of Egyptology. There are even links to the Tutankhamen story extending to our own town, and as the birth-place of a leading Egyptologist of the past, Barnsley finally has a chance to reveal this little-known side of its story too.
